Overall Impressions

Overall the route comprises long road sections (which are hard on the feet), sections over moorland where navigation can be tricky and conditions that were very boggy (after a wet winter) , and sections along beaches and sand dunes. During the time we were in The Hebrides the wind was quite strong almost every day and one day was a wash out due to a storm. Accommodation is sparse and due to Covid many places were not open or were short staffed. We had the advantage of a car, but for those walking every step of the entire route it is a major commitment and long days. Perhaps the weather and the conditions under foot would be better later in the season, but then you may run into midges which can be tiresome.

Camping is an option for the hardened walker, and to anybody completing the route and camping along the way I say ........."Chapeau"!

Our trip was organised from start to finish by Alpine Exploratory. The arrangements worked like clockwork and the detailed route information packs were brilliant. An advisory just before we left gave us uptodate notes on key sections which were not advisable or were closed. The accommodation along the route was excellent as was the food in the restaurants. Castlebay Hotel, Langass Lodge and Harris Hotel stood out when it came to their restaurants. All the Hebrideans we met were friendly and welcoming. Due to the distances involved in getting there and the route itself this will be a once in a lifetime trip, but is was a memorable experience and well worth it.

Pre-booking dinner reservations is advisable (perhaps with the exception of Stornoway)
